pen|tose «PEHN tohs», noun.
any one of a class of simple sugars (monosaccharides) that contain five atoms of carbon in each molecule, are constituents of ribonucleic acid, and are not fermented by yeast. Pentoses are produced in animal tissues, and are obtained from pentosans by hydrolysis. Deoxyribose and ribose are pentoses. »
